Dr. Betül Şen Gümüş

I am a teacher with 19 years of experience, specialised in STEM education and science teaching. I successfully completed the Bachelor’s programme in Science Teaching, Master’s programme in Elementary Education and PhD programme in Science and Mathematics Education at Hacettepe University. With the academic knowledge and discipline I gained throughout my education, I adopted innovative approaches to develop my students’ scientific thinking and problem solving skills.
In the international arena, I participated in the Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy programme in the USA, ICSE Mathematics and Science Education Summer School in the Netherlands, Climate Education Summer University in France, and finally Science On Stage Europe programme in Finland as an ambassador for Turkey. I was also a leader in STEM&Makers Fest/Expo events held in Turkey. These trainings allowed me to gain a perspective in line with global standards in my field.
In the field of projects, in addition to the Horizon 2020 MOST Project, I worked as an education specialist in TUBITAK projects between 2006-2010. While the work I carried out with my teammates within the scope of the StarT Luma project ranked in the top 10 worldwide, the experiences I gained in international projects enabled me to contribute to the dissemination of open school practices in STEM education.
My academic publications include chapter authorship in STEM Education Practices I and III, national and international conference proceedings, and articles published in various scientific journals. I contributed to understanding students’ perceptions of science with my book “Children’s Images of Scientist”. I also took part in studies focusing on developing assessment strategies for teachers and students.
I passionately continue my work to popularise innovation and project-based learning approaches in education, to increase the scientific curiosity of young generations and to make STEM education more effective.
